All artists in all media are invited to submit work for themed guest art shows at CrossRoads Gallery. Below are CR artwork acceptance policies – following these policies will make things easier and happier for both the Artist and CR Gallery.
#1 SUBMITTING WORK FOR THEMED SHOWS — Themes of upcoming shows are available upon request from CrossRoads Gallery and are also published in local newspapers and on our website and our facebook page. Artwork in any show should relate to the show’s theme, but artists are encouraged to make their own connections and to be creative with the themes. Final decisions as to whether or not a piece of art fits with the theme will rest with the CrossRoads Gallery jury.
Works to be considered for a show should be delivered to CrossRoads on designated dates ONLY; artists will be asked to pick up any extra work (i.e. not selected for the show) as soon as possible. Unless specific arrangements are made, any artwork not picked up within 10 days of notice will be stored outside in the container, with no guarantee that it will remain dry or undamaged (CR is not liable for any damage which occurs to the artwork past the 10-day timeline). Furthermore, any artwork left after the 10-day period will become the property of CR to be resold or given away, at the Gallery’s discretion.
#2 SUBMISSION AND SHOW FEES — A non-refundable $15 showing fee must accompany each work submitted for consideration (if your work is not selected for the show, it will be refunded; if your work is accepted, that is your prepaid showing fee).
#3 ACCEPTED ARTWORK — Artwork accepted for a show must be finished (no wet paintings!), labeled, framed (if necessary) and wired (i.e. ready to hang).
Artists must have framed originals to get wall space, and the artwork must be for sale (we’re a gallery, not a museum). Frames should be wired and ready to hang when you bring them in for a show, and each piece should be labeled on the back with your name, the title of the picture, media and price. Note: Stretched canvas with a finished gallery wrap does not have to be framed; stretched canvas with a stapled wrap must be framed.
CrossRoads will make title cards for hanging works.
You should also bring an inventory list with the title and price of each piece (it will be attached to your receipt for artwork received).#4 WHEN YOUR WORK IS ON DISPLAY — If your work is accepted for a themed show, plan to leave your work for the entire show (don’t think you can take it in and out because you need it somewhere else for a weekend show).
If you have sales at CrossRoads, a check (less CR’s commission) will be ready for you on or around the 7th of the following month.
#5 CONSIGNMENT — All works are accepted on consignment only. You price your own work; take into consideration the commission (35%) you will be paying CrossRoads for sales.
#6 PRICES/COMMISSIONS — You set the price for your artwork but CrossRoads must agree that it is reasonable before it can be offered in the gallery for sale. When you price your works, keep in mind that CrossRoads’ commission will come out of the price you set.
If your work is on display and offered for sale at other places in town, you should make sure your prices are the same (don’t undersell us somewhere else).
#7 ORIGINALITY and QUALITY — Only original works will be considered for shows or features. Only professionally finished, high quality work will be accepted for each themed show.
#8 SUITABLE CONTENT — CrossRoads Gallery is open to all sorts of artistic statements and welcomes art that some may feels “pushes the envelope.” We do, however, draw the line at any art that is deemed derogatory to any persons or peoples, or which show blatant disrespect to women or other minorities. The final decision for suitability for any work of art rests with CrossRoads managers and ownership.
#9 PICKING UP YOUR WORK — CrossRoads Gallery is short on storage space – please pick your work up at the designated time. (See #1)
#10 WORK COMMISSIONS, CLIENTS AND SALES YOU MAKE — If you receive a commission to do work for a client because of a referral from CrossRoads Gallery or Tehachapi Art Center, or because CR or TAC put you in touch with that client, you are expected to pay a 10% commission to CrossRoads when you are paid for your work (on the honor system).
Also, if you sell a painting or piece of art that was on display in CrossRoads or Tehachapi Art Center, to someone who saw the work in the Gallery, you are expected to pay the full commission that would be due TAC if you had sold it during the show (in other words, if we find you a buyer or work, don’t try to cheat us out of our fees).
April 2011, “April Fools!” (art is due Wednesday, March 30, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. ONLY). April’s First Friday falls smack dab on April Fool’s Day, so lets have some fun with our art – anything goes as long as it’s fun or silly or whacky (all guests and artists are invited to dress appropriately).
May 2011, “Mayflowers” (art is due Wednesday, May 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. ONLY). You make the connection: either bring florals, or something to do with big ships heading to a new world, or …?
June 2011, “Summer Animals, Summer Not” (art is due Wednesday, June 1, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. ONLY). It’s summertime and animals of all kinds (including humans) are out to play; bring us any work that shows summertime with some life in it!
July 2011, “Freedom of Expression” (art is due Wednesday, June 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. only). July is the birth month of our nation so we’ll be celebrating America and our Constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech and expression. Guest art can take the form of general patriotism or any other form of expression that honors and respects our most cherished freedoms.
August 2011, “Western Traditions” (art is due Wednesday, August 3, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. only). This is our annual western art show to honor and be part of the traditional Mountain Festival activities throughout the month.
