Bear Valley artist Marti Howell paints in oils, pastels, and watercolors; she also makes hand-made sculpture and vessels from stoneware.
“I never expected to paint in three different mediums,” she says. “However, each one offers something that is both a plus and a minus for the painter. When I get tire of one medium, I switch to a different one and I can get excited all over again! I think this keeps my work fresh and appeals to a wider variety of people.”
Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area – where she worked as a teacher (including being an art teacher for six years), counselor and administrator for public schools – Marti and photographer husband Arden have lived in the Tehachapi area for nine years.
She paints a diverse range of subjects but does more people and animals than anything else. “I never get tired of painting people,” she says. “There is always something new to learn.”
Recently, Marti has been working on a series of children which will be on display during November at CrossRoads Gallery, where she is a regular member and a featured artist for the month.
She also likes painting animals “because they appeal to many people either as a connection to a loved companion or to the wonders of nature. Plus, I enjoy the challenge of capturing their essence and personality.” Marti also does commissioned animal paintings.
“I have three goals when I paint,” she says. “They are: learn something new, increase my painting skills, and have fun! I think it’s important to have personal goals and enjoy the process because there is no predicting what someone will buy.”
In addition to painting and clay work Marti likes to read (two or three books per week), ride (she and Arden own three horses), and garden (she often grows her own vegetables and flowers from seed). “It’s hard to find time for all these activities!” she says.
Marti shows her paintings each spring at the Bear Valley Cultural Arts show and has been a member of Crossroads Gallery for three years. “I love being a member of the art community at Crossroads. We have something for everyone, plus many talented artists!”
