Spotlight on Ellie Korn, new artist at CrossRoads for March 2011

James Wilson, CrossRoads general manager and artist representative, will be featuring the work of newly signed Ellie Korn at the Gallery in March.

Since childhood Ellie has wanted to paint, but before moving to Los Angeles in 1999 -- after living in Maine, Virginia, Florida, Washington D.C., and New York City -- she never really had.

When she first came to the area, she says she “spent every weekend driving into the mountains, up the Pacific Coast Highway , through the canyons, and into the desert.” She easily put 300 miles on her car in a day exploring this new country, and with no formal training she started painting landscapes from memory.

In 2001 the budding artist met Margot Lennartz at a plein air show at the Descanso Gardens Art Gallery . She subsequently studied with Margot, a California Art Club member, over an eight-year period. Since then she has also studied with Margot’s son Frank and renowned plein air painter Karl Dempwolf; she is also inspired by artists as diverse as Andrew Wyeth, Georgia O’Keefe, and Sam Hyde Harris.

Now the stark beauty of Southern California’s landscape continues to be her muse as she makes her home in Lancaster . She paints because, she says, she is “moved by color and light.” Translating the beauty she sees to canvas “is a process of the heart.”

Her style invites the observer into the painting, and she wants to share the beauty that she sees with other people. CrossRoads is pleased to have Ellie Korn’s work on the walls to help her meet that end, and will be featuring her and her work during the month March.

Ellie will be on hand to meet other artists and art lovers and share some insights into her work at the First Friday Artist reception at CrossRoads on March 4, from 5 to 8 p.m.
